The staff of Middle-Earth News will be taking a short break over the holidays, making this issue our last before the New Year. We will begin posting again just after the Professor's birthday, on Monday, January 4th, so please feel free to continue sending in updates over the break. Thanks!

~Peter Jackson 'plans movie museum' Peter Jackson is planning to set up a film museum in Wellington, sources say. It is understood the development, with a working name of New Zealand Movie World, is planned for opposite his Park Road Post Production facility in Miramar. Props from Jackson's movies -- including his Lord of the Rings trilogy and as far back as Bad Taste in 1987 -- would be on public display. A film school could also be included in the development.
A spokesman for Jackson said yesterday that there had been "nothing new and nothing active" in planning for a Wellington-based movie museum and film school since a similar proposal for Shelly Bay fell over about a year ago. [More]

Thanks, Mews! DISCUSSIONS OF INTEREST:• From TOR.com:~LotR re-read: Two Towers IV.8, "The Stairs of Cirith Ungol" "This is a chapter in three parts: the scenes in the vicinity of Minas Morgul; the metafictional conversation about stories; and the point where I finally have to give up my probably-silly project of calling the character Sméagol, for he has irrevocably become Gollum."
• From The One Ring Forums:~The Silmarillion: Of Túrin Turambar, Part I [cont.] "While I was reading the Lord of the Rings, I found the references to the 'days of old' very striking. Many of the older characters talk about them in a very nostalgic kind of way, as if those times will never come again, and as if to lament their passing. Then when I read the Silmarillion, which relates the tails of the Elder Days, I found that it was the same thing. People always speak of times gone by with fondness and regret. They talk about their ancestors and their great deeds." [Conclusion of Part I]
~The Silmarillion: Of Túrin Turambar, Part II "[T]he characters here divert so much from the norm of Tolkien. Not often do we see a complete anti-hero like we do in Turin. He is part tragic, part amazingly heroic and part deserving of our spite...To pick the story up where Nix so expertly left off, we have a warning from one of the Valar that Morgoth has unleashed a massive force led by Glaurung. Yet, when Ulmo's message of warning is heard, Turin spurns the thought of tearing down his bridge and going back into hiding." [Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3]
~Letters from Father Christmas [cont.] "Each December from 1920 to 1943, J.R.R. Tolkien's children received letters, often illustrated, written by their father in the guise of Father Christmas, who is the English (or Northern European) embodiment of that December, Christian holiday. Tolkien would contrive that these letters arrived seemingly without his involvement: the postman might bring them with hand-drawn stamps affixed, or they might appear by the chimney, apparently having been delivered 'by elf messenger'. Likewise the Tolkien children's letters to Fr. Xtmas (one of several abbreviations Tolkien used) would disappear, apparently picked up for journey to the North Pole." [1928-29] [1930-31] [1932] [1933] [1934]
CLASSIFIED:• From lotricons:~Happy Holidays and help requested for icons in particular "I'm hoping to find two types of Tolkien icons...1) Lotr characters' icons with a winter or Christmas theme. Not of the cast members as themselves, but as their LotR characters...One in particular is of Faramir and Eowyn that I had ages ago is one that I'm really looking for: they are standing together in a winter landscape, facing away and with snow falling. A very well-done manip...2) Art icons. In other words, icons made from the artwork of various artists known for their Tolkien artwork, including, but not limited to, Ted Nasmith, John Howe, Alan Lee, Pauline Baynes, and of course, the Professor himself, his own artwork."
RESEARCH AIDS:• From estelanui:~The Good, the Bad, and the Outlawed "It's almost impossible to have a real hero in Middle-earth who has not passed through a period of dispossession and outlawry. But since outlawry is the province of all the villains, too, there must be something in the character of the hero which helps him to achieve redemption." An essay by Michael Martinez.
